Interview from soundspike.com:

Sitting in a dark dressing room at Scottsdale, AZ’s Martini Ranch,The Pretty Reckless’ Taylor Momsen is a sight to behold. Wearing oversized black sunglasses (think Jackie O.), Momsen is donning a gray tank dress and her flaxen tresses are parted into two long braids.

The 18-year-old singer/actress — who starred as Jenny Humphrey on the CW TV series “Gossip Girl” and as Cindy Lou Who in the Jim Carrey flick “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” — is kind, sweet and even a little excited that a journalist has come to see her.

An interview should be the least of her thrills. She’s on a headlining tour with her band The Pretty Reckless, traversing the country in support of her 2012 EP “Hit Me Like a Man” and last year’s full-length, “Light Me Up.” The act is preparing to open for Marilyn Manson on its tour.

Momsen spoke to SoundSpike about “Hit Me Like a Man,” preparing new material and being taken seriously enough as a musician to share the stage with System of a Down, Slipknot and Marilyn Manson.

SoundSpike: You must be excited that “Hit Me Like a Man” is doing so well.

Taylor Momsen: It’s super exciting. It’s No. 3 on the rock chart. Bruce Springsteen is No. 1 and 2, so I don’t feel too bad. It’s pretty awesome. It’s kind of crazy.

“Hit Me Like a Man” is a collection of new songs and live tracks. How did you decide which live tracks to include?

We wanted to “Make Me Wanna Die” because now we have every version of “Make Me Wanna Die” possible, recorded acoustic and all live versions. “Since You’re Gone” is one of our favorite songs to play live. We usually open the set with it and it’s when we lock in that groove. It’s definitely one of our favorites.

Have you started work on a new album?

Yeah, yeah, we perform the U.S. headline tour, The Medicine Tour — I’m not used to calling a tour a name — then we jump on for a month with Manson. And then right after that we go straight in the studio and start recording the second album.

How far along are you?

Not far enough. It’s never done until it’s mastered and I can’t touch it anymore.

How do you know when it’s done?

It’s weird once it’s done. When the song is written, it’s constantly evolving. It’s not working then it works. There’s no in between. It’s either great or it’s not. We have a very high standard of things, which makes it difficult. Hopefully it’ll pay off in the end.

What is the direction of the new material?

I think it’s definitely evolving. I think the EP gives you an indication of where the music’s going. That’s why we wanted to release something. We wanted to just give fans new material because we’ve been touring this album, “Light Me Up,” for so long. We needed to start playing some new things. Also just to give them a taste of where the direction’s going. I don’t know what that is. I think the biggest thing that’s changed is my standard of what’s good has changed and grown. I’m competing with myself now along with everyone else. Putting out the first record, I’m not competing with anything to do with me. I’m competing with the rest of the world. As far as songwriting, I’ve definitely raised the bar of what I consider great. That’s challenging, but if you’re not beating yourself then what the fuck are you doing?

Were you surprised at the success of “Light Me Up”?

Extremely surprised. It was amazing. The first time we played London, Notting Hill Arts Club, it was the first time we’ve ever been to London. Every person in the audience knew every word to every song. It was surreal. It was one of the best feelings in the world when you have an audience singing back every word that you wrote and slaved over. “Wow, you actually really listened to this and Jesus, thank you.” It’s kind of like that everywhere we go. It’s amazing. You can’t ask for anything more than that.

That must make it all worthwhile.

When you finish the song, that’s the first thing. That’s 10 seconds of pleasure. Then the touring’s fun. It’s the other side of making music. The fans can really make or break a show. We don’t play to tracks, so it’s different every night. Even if we’re playing the same set, no one plays the same thing twice, never. It makes it fun to play every night. You never really know what to expect. You very much feed off the audience. The fact that they’re different every night and in a different place every night. We’ve been doing it for two years now and we don’t want to stop. We just want to stop to make new music so we can play those songs, too.

Tell me about your songwriting process.

I write all the time, like all the time. You don’t really stop writing. You write a lot of shitty stuff before you write something good. You are just constantly looking for anything to inspire you like it could be this couch. You never know. You’re constantly keeping your eyes and ears open, whether it’s your life or someone else’s experience, a line or a phrase. Every song is written differently. The only common thread is it starts with an idea, a very succinct idea, whether that be a riff or a lyric or a melody. It’s got to start somewhere.

Is it difficult to write on the road?

It’s definitely something I’ve had to adjust to. It’s not really the road; it’s just to find privacy and to shut yourself off from the rest of the world, which is a very small world on a bus with a lot of people. I have to go live in my own head for a while. It’s a challenge but we’re getting used to it. I’ve sectioned off the back room on this tour. So I can sit and write.

Are you excited about opening for Marilyn Manson?

Really excited. I’ve been a fan of his forever. We were just in Australia doing Soundwave Festival. Unfortunately, we were playing the exact same time as Manson every day. We never got to meet Manson, but we met the rest of the band. They’re all really great guys. It should be a really fun tour. We’re really excited.

How do you prepare for a tour like that?

Not really any differently than any other tours. We look at it like we have our show, as an opening band you don’t know what to expect because it’s not your audience. I think you have to go for it and do your thing. We’re not going to change anything per whoever we’re touring with. We are what we are. If people like it great, if they don’t, then that’s cool, too. I think it’s kind of the same thing.

Soundwave must have been fun.

Awesome. It was my first time in Australia. It was awesome. There are so many great bands. It was such a great tour. System of a Down was headlining. I got to hang out with those guys, great dudes. Some of my favorite bands — Slipknot, Manson, Black Label Society — fucking awesome dudes. It was a heavy rock tour, which was fun.

It must have been nice to be taken seriously enough that they included you in that mix.

It’s great. It’s the first festival we’ve played that’s really been from front to end it was a rock/metal tour. We’ve done a lot of the festivals where there’s been rock bands. We played with Foo Fighters and Liam Gallagher’s new project Beady Eye, lots and lots of great bands. There are still the other stages that are the ultra-pop stages. To be on a tour that was just metal dudes the whole time, it was kind of awesome. We felt very in our element, which is cool.

After a sexually charged show in which the 18-year-old singer performed with her band, The Pretty Reckless, at the House of Blues in West Hollywood on Wednesday, a source overheard Momsen chatting about an upcoming booking. “I have to do this deejay gig,” the former “Gossip Girl” actress was telling friends as she was getting her hair and makeup retouched backstage. “Oh my God, it’s so easy. All you have to do is press a couple of buttons.”

Gossip Girl Taylor Momsen has taken the rock and roll world by storm with her band The Pretty Reckless. The band’s 2010 debut album Light Me Up was pretty much critically acclaimed and the band has been touring extensively, including an opening slot on Evanescence‘s recent tour.

Now, the band is back with a five-track EP entitled Hit Me Like A Man (iTunes). In anticipation of this release, BD Music caught up with singer Taylor Momsen to discuss the current state of things with the band as well as Taylor’s opinion on how women are seen in the rock and roll world. Check below for this exclusive interview!

Bloody-Disgusting: How are you doing?

Taylor Momsen: I’m doing very well, thank you!

BD: Tell me about the ‘Hit Me Like A Man EP’. Why release an EP instead of wait for a traditional full release?

TM: We’ve been touring ‘Light Me Up’ for almost two years now, so we wanted give fans a taste of where the new record is going, the direction. And it was for us! We’re excited to play these songs.

BD: There is a lot of touring in your future, including trips to South America. What other places would you like to visit and tour?

TM: Well, Australia was one of the big ones that I wanted and we just got back from Sydney. It was awesome. Everyone says Australia is one of their favorite places to tour and now I see why. It’s beautiful!

And we’re definitely excited about South America but, right now, I’m just so excited to be back in America. I’m excited to be on a tour bus for three months and not have to fly everywhere. I’m not a fan, I really don’t like flying [laughs]. I get very nervous flying. Plus, we’re going to be touring with Marilyn Manson! How cool is that?!

BD: I honestly think you’re the first musician I’ve spoken to who is excited about being in a bus for three months!

TM: [laughs] I love touring! I love the road and to not have to fly to every city? Australia was a lot of fun but it was a lot of flying. From Brisbane to Sydney, Sydney to Melbourne, Melbourne to Adelaide, Adelaide to Perth. It’s a lot of planes. And then there’s the customs. It’s just such a joy to not have to wake up and pack everything in the morning and have to deal with that.

BD: About seven months ago, you told Elle magazine that you quit acting to focus on music. How do you feel about that decision and where you are at now?

TM: I can say I haven’t had any second thoughts. I live for it. I love writing songs and I love playing every night and recording. To be able to just focus on that and have all my attention on that is just amazing.

BD: Rock is generally seen as a male dominated genre. But throughout rock history, women have proven their strength and intensity from Joan Jett to Wendy O to Amy Lee and more. What do you feel about the state of women in rock?

TM: I don’t really like to look at it like that. I like rock and roll these days, whether it’s female or male fronted. I mean, most of the people I look up to are men, like Robert Plant or The Beatles. I just feel that there isn’t a lot of rock coming out so I listen to it all and don’t really think about that.

BD: Another example of the male dominance of rock is the constant need to sexualize women who enter the genre. There was the ‘hottest chicks of metal tour’, there are countless hottest girls in rock, etc… but not really anything of the sort for men. What do you think it would take to get women to the point where their music speaks greater volumes than their appearance?

TM: Image is always going to be a part of music. Yes, there are women who are clearly sexualized but look at Led Zeppelin! Sexual icons as men! So, I think that they can go hand in hand as long as the image doesn’t overtake the music. I think that’s the biggest struggle, that the music should come first. But you can’t hide your image either.

BD: Taylor, thanks so much for your time and I wish you the best of luck!

TM: Thank you! Thank you so much!

Taylor Momsen became a rock musician after growing up listening to AC/DC and Nirvana.

The Pretty Reckless frontwoman – currently working on a follow-up to the group’s 2010 debut ‘Light Me Up’ – was inspired to start making heavy rock ‘n’ roll music by her father’s albums.

She said: ”My dad has a massive record collection. So I grew up listening to vinyl, you know all the classics, Beatles, Zeppelin, Who, Pink Floyd, you know AC/DC, Soundgarden, Nirvana. So I just, I kind of grew up with it, and it just stuck.”

The 18-year-old singer-and-actress was ”so excited” when the ‘Miss Nothing’ hitmakers completed their debut album, but she thinks it’s the ”most incredible feeling in the world” when fans sing her own songs back to her during live performances.

She added to PerezHilton.com: ”Finishing the record was the first thing. When it was actually done, you know, I was so excited. But then, you know writing any type of song – any time you finish something that’s like the best feeling in the world.

”And then what comes after that is playing it live, and then from, translating from playing it live to having the fans sing every word to every song back to you is just the most incredible feeling in the world.”

Taylor Momsen and her band Pretty Reckless have put together probably the raciest music video in the young band’s history.

In the sexy clip for her new single, My Medicine, Taylor sways around the house party, playing guitar from the floor, her fiery gaze searing through the lens.

The clip also features Taylor’s close friend, retired adult film superstar Jenna Haze as a topless waitress who also engages in some sexy poses with other partygoers, as the vibe gets more and more psychedelic.

Taylor and Jenna recently appeared in a racy pictorial together for FHM magazine, and were both in Australia recently for the Soundwave Festival. Taylor performed, and Jenna was out supporting her boyfriend Greg Puciato’s band, Dillinger Escape Plan.

The pair met over Twitter, with Haze’s boyfriend revealing the singer is a “big fan” of his girlfriend’s work on Soundwave TV. Good to see the sexy photos they made together are now immortalised on film – these girls are hot!

Taylor and Pretty Reckless are playing a slew of headlining tour dates as well as supporting Marilyn Manson over the next few months, before returning to the recording studio to create the band’s long-awaited second album.

Just launched on the internet, the My Medicine clip has raised some eyebrows already, some claiming the clip is just too sexy.

Before the models hit the catwalk at the Marchesa fall-winter 2012 show at New York’s Fashion Week last month, heads were turning: Who was the dignified young blonde in a posh black lace evening dress, there at the invite of designer Georgina Chapman and hanging with Stacy Keibler, Bar Refaeli and Petra Nemcova?

It was 18-year-old rocker and ex-“Gossip Girl” actress Taylor Momsen, more typically seen in Gothic attire: black leather jackets, microminis, thigh-high fishnets and 5-inch platform heels.

The blogosphere went wild over how The Pretty Reckless front-vixen cleaned up.

Momsen — who is visiting The City with her band today, backing their new EP “Hit Me Like a Man” — doesn’t understand the fuss.

“I’m a giant Marchesa fan, and Georgina is one of the sweetest people on the planet, and so talented,” she says. “I missed her show last year because I was on tour, but I was actually in New York this year and finally able to make it. And as we speak, I’m trying on clothes for a taping of the TV show ‘Fashion Police’ tomorrow. I’m getting interviewed by Joan f—— Rivers, so I’m really excited!”

Momsen, known for her charming childhood role as Cindy Lou Who in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” is growing up fast.

Her raccoon-mascaraed visage already has been the face of U.K. chain New Look, plus Madonna and her daughter Lourdes’ new Material Girl clothing line.

“That was definitely a shocking phone call to get — I mean, it’s Madonna!” she says of the unexpected offer. “She’s an icon, and one of the originators of controversy, so I have the utmost respect for her. And Lourdes has a great sense of fashion and style, so we put the looks together ourselves for those shoots.”

The thespian says she’s finished with stage and screen, though. She left “Gossip Girl” and gave up acting entirely.

“I’ve been doing it since I was 2, and it wasn’t something that I chose,” Momsen says. “So it was a great ride, but writing and touring and music are my world now.” The performer, who will head out as an apt opening act for Marilyn Manson this year, is courting controversy with “Hit Me Like a Man,” and the line “Hit me like a man/ Love me like a woman.”

She says, “I like the music to speak for itself and let people interpret it however they want. And I tend not to speak of my personal life, so what it means to me is no one’s f—— business!”

Former “Gossip Girl” star Taylor Momsen has no plans to return to acting as she prepares for a tour with Marilyn Manson.

Momsen, who played cute Cindy Lou Who in “The Grinch” and raccoon-eyed Jenny on “Gossip Girl,” fronts rock band The Pretty Reckless, and she insists that’s her priority these days after walking away from a lucrative TV acting gig.

And she’s determined to stay away from the big and small screens.

Asked if she’d ever consider a return, Momsen tells HollyScoop.com, “[Bleep] no! Never! I am done, done, done. … It’s good to finally be able to focus on music and not have to work on 10 jobs at once.”

Momsen’s Manson tour begins in April, and she can’t wait to hit the road with her hero: “I’m a big fan.”
